Records Relating to Rev. Jeremiah Purtill, Supe... | Saint Michael's College Archives & Special Collections

In 1952, Fr Purtill was again elected to the office of Superior General. This second term also saw more expansion, particularly in the South and in the Formation program. In addition to new parishes in the South, the Society’s mission in England underwent expansion as well, with the addition of traveling missions in a rural area of Brentwood and Stock. During this term Purtill arranged for the purchase of Fairholt, a mansion in Burlington, VT that was used for the seminary. He also oversaw the transfer of the novitiate from Putney, VT to Enders Island, CT, an island the Society received as a gift from Alys Enders. This term was not without problems however. Expansion in the some areas of the South resulted in consolidation in other areas of the South, and the property in Pontigny was sold and the College of St. Edme closed after experiencing financial problems. The bulk of this subgroup is correspondence, which is arranged alphabetically by correspondent/office. The series also includes correspondence from the South, which is further subdivided by correspondent/office. Correspondence included in the South sub-series is that which accumulated in the Superior General’s Office. Most originated in the South, although copies of outgoing mail are sometimes included Correspondence with other local administrations is located with the Local Administration Record Group.
