The bulk of this subgroup is correspondence, which is arranged alphabetically by correspondent/office.  The series also includes correspondence from the South, which is further subdivided by correspondent/office.  Correspondence included in the South sub-series is that which accumulated in the Superior General’s Office.  Most originated in the South, although copies of outgoing mail are sometimes included.  Correspondence with other local administrations is located with the Local Administration record group.  Another large series is the Allentown Subject series.  This includes a great deal of information related to real estate.  Another subject file of interest is the CMSM file, which includes a great deal of information related the Conference of Major Superiors of Men that was held at Saint Michael’s College.

Collection Historical Note

Eymard Galligan was born in Saratoga Springs, NY on Jan. 12, 1922.  He attended Saint Michael's College and then entered the Novitiate in Putney, VT.  After going through the Society’s formation program, he became the first Superior of the new Novitiate on Enders Island, CT.  He then became the Superior of the Southern House, where he oversaw the growth of the missions during a period of great turmoil throughout the Southern US.  He was elected Superior General in June 1964, and he took over a society with apostolates in 5 countries.  His first term of office is marked by the struggle to adapt these apostolates to a changing world, especially in the South and a church dramatically affected by the Second Vatican Council.  By the end of this term, the Society’s relationship with Saint Michael’s College changed drastically with the establishment of a lay president, the society began to slowly consolidate its apostolates and to scrutinize its heritage and mission through three Chapters.
