Collection Historical Note

The Staff Welfare Committee began its life as the Personnel Advisory Committee. Its purpose was originally to serve as a council of advisors on all matters related to conditions of employment, personnel policies, and practices. The committee included the Director of Personnel, the Vice President for Administration, and a member of campus ministry. According to its charter, one of its purposes was to serve as a resource for the Vice President and Director of Personnel regarding employee concerns, perceptions, and attitudes. In 1998 the committee changed its name to PWC hoped to become a committee of action. The charter also changed, although only slightly. The committee did begin to take on issues in a proactive manner, exploring controversial issues such as downsizing, unionizations, and a living wage. As the campus struggled with financial setbacks, the committee took on a role of advocacy not realized before. In 2006, the committee again moved forward by asserting a role in the governance of non-academic affairs and in the life of the community. The committee continues as an elected organization acknowledged by both the trustees and the administration.
