Records Relating to Treasurers General | Saint Michael's College Archives & Special Collections
Material from each Treasurer General is in its own series, and is mostly correspondence and other material related to investments and how the society dealt with them. Annual reports from investment groups are included where extant, as is much correspondence related to the selection of a particular firm. Routine correspondence related to the sale of stocks and to the transfer of funds has been discarded. Much of the correspondence of the Treasurer General with individual Edmundites has also been discarded, since much of concerned routine financial matters. Correspondence that contained non-financial or complex financial information was retained. Correspondence with directors or administrators relating to financial matters was usually kept, except for routine letters pertaining to acceptance of budgets. Only a few of the Treasurers General had some subject files of interest, particularly the social security files of Fr. Purtill and the social and legal audit files of McLaughlin and DiLorenzo.

Linnehan, 1946-1970 Folder List The very scant material available for Fr. Linnehan consists mainly of material related to investments, along with some correspondence.

Purtill, 1971-1982 Folder List Rev. Jeremiah Purtill became Treasurer General at an interesting time in the Society. The Society was looking carefully at its many apostolates, was working on new constitutions and was for the first time affected by Social Security Administration. Purtill’s records include much information about investments, especially with individual banks and firms. It was during Purtill’s time that the Society aggressively began investing materials. Among the more interesting things in the Purtill files are those items related to Social Security, a huge issue for religious across America. His correspondence files are also interesting, as much seemingly routine correspondence was retained, since many of the letters and notes contain insightful personal statements about either the society or personnel.

The files are arranged chronologically into the following sub-series: Chapter reports, Correspondence, gifts, charities, investments, Louisville Downs, mass foundations, Personnel, Policies, Research on financial matters, Retirement fund info, Seminary burse, and Social security.

McLaughlin, 1982-86 Folder List Rev. Joe McLaughlin became Treasurer General following Rev. Purtill. His tenure as Superior General marked the beginning of changes in much of the Society’s administration, and his files reflect that, particularly changes in investment philosophy and stewardship. McLaughlin was elected Superior General of the Society in July 1986, cutting short his time as Treasurer General. The files are arranged chronologically within the following sub-series: Chapter reports, correspondence, gifts, charities, investments, notes to self, memos, misc., personnel, policies and procedures, seminary burses, seminary guild reorganization, SSE assessment review, social audit, stewardship reports

Gallagher, 1986-87 Folder List Kevin Gallagher was the first lay person to serve as Treasurer General of the Society. Unfortunately, this series is very small, in part because of his short tenure. Files that appear in other Treasurer General files do not appear to have been retained, unless they were merged with the DiLorenzo files. The files are arranged chronologically within the following sub-series: correspondence, reports and investments.

DiLorenzo. 1987-1992 Folder List Andrea DiLorenzo became Treasurer General of the Society after serving as assistant to both McLaughlin and Gallagher. The series, which is among the largest of the Treasurer General files, are arranged chronologically within the following sub-series: Correspondence, Financial reports, gifts, charities, Investments, Legal audit , Long Island Lighting litigation, Notes, memos, Personnel, Report to General Chapter, Stewardship reports.

Coombs, 1992-1995 Folder List Rev. James Coombs became Treasurer General of the Society following the departure of Andrea DiLorenzo. The files in this series are routine reports and general information. These are arranged chronologically.

Myhalyk, 1995-1996 Rev. Richard Myhalyk was appointed Treasurer General in 1995. At the 1996 he was appointed Superior of the Southern House, so his tenure as Treasurer General was short lived. These files include only reports.
