Collection Overview

Title: Superior General Rev. Richard Myhalyk, 1998-2006

ID: SSE 2/SSE 2.19

Extent: 9.75 Linear Feet

Arrangement: Arranged into series.: Local Administration; Committees; General Council; SSE, Inc.; and Saint Michael's College Board of Trustees .

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Rev. Myhalyk served as Superior General during a time of continued contraction of the Society's apostolates.  Of interest in the Local Administration areas are the records relating to the closure of the Bishop Perry Middle School following Hurricane Katrina, and the prolonged legal maneuverings related to the custody of Enders Island/ St. Edmund's Retreat.  Also of importance during these two terms is the continued decline in membership,  This sub-group contains administrative records.  Records from local administration, committees, the General Council and a large number of subject files.  There is also a Saint Michael's College Board of Trustees series, since as Superior General, Fr. Myhalyk served on the Board. The subgroup retains its original order.

Collection Historical Note

Rev. Richard Myhalyk became Superior General in 1998 following the retirement of Superior General Hart.  Myhalyk, a native of Elmira NY, graduated from Saint Michael's College in 1966.  After his ordination in 1971, Fr. Myhalyk served at Saint Michael's College, followed by service in Mobile, AL.  He served as vocation director and assistant to the Superior General, even serving briefly as acting Superior General during the medical leave of Rev. Edward Leary.  He was the principal Drafter of the 1986 Constitution.  He spent a number of years working at Saint Michael's College as institutional researcher and assistant to Pres. Paul Reiss.  Immediately prior to becoming Superior General he served in the Southern Missions, and he returned to Selma as Mission Director after his final term as Superior General.
