Scope and Contents of the Materials
This record group includes records of all Chapters, including Chapters of affairs, extraordinary chapters and renewal chapters. These records are arranged into series by Chapter date, regardless of type of chapter. Each chapter sets its own agenda and its own rule governing the chapter itself. Most business of a particular chapter is concluded during the chapter, although some things are revisited at later chapters. The records of a particular chapter provide good insight into what was actually happening at a given time in the Society, as well as somewhat setting forth ideas of what was to come. The records from the earliest Chapters are usually little more than the chapter reports, but beginning with the 1946 chapter, planning and supporting documents appear. Two additional series are convocations and AV material. The Convocation series is also arranged chronologically. Although these periodic, reflective meetings are not officially a part of the chapter, they are often called to discuss issues that will be presented at the next chapter, or were brought up at the past one. They were included with the General Chapter Record Group on the recommendation of the Superior General Myhalyk. The AV series is arranged by date, and includes audiotapes of chapter proceedings.
Collection Historical Note
The first General Chapter of the SSE was held in 1891, although elections had been held prior to that. Chapter were held every three years until 1930. From 1930-1970 this changed to every 6 years. The 1970 General Chapter reduced the term of superiors general from six to four years and adjusted the schedule for General Chapters. Chapters were held in intervening years in extraordinary circumstances. Since 1998, the Chapters have been assembly chapters rather than delegate chapters, and all members of the Society are invited to attend.
The General Chapter of the Society of Saint Edmund is the supreme authority of the Society while in session. At the Chapter, delegates meet together to elect the Superior General and his Council and discuss and make decisions about issues affecting the Society. According the SSE Constitutions, an ordinary General Chapter has the following responsibilities: (a) to safeguard the patrimony of the Society; (b) to promote renewal and adaptation; (c) to elect the Superior General and his council; (d) to deal with matters of greater importance; and (e) to issue universally binding norms.
