Collection Historical Note
Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest academic honor society, invited Saint Michael’s College to establish a chapter in 2003. Saint Michael's is one of only three Vermont institutions to have Phi Beta Kappa chapters on their campuses: Only 20 of the nation’s 220 Catholic colleges have chapters. Less than one percent of college graduates nationwide are admitted into the elite organization.
The Saint Michael’s College chapter includes officers made up of faculty members who belong to Phi Beta Kappa. This group, along with other members of the chapter, elects new members based up strict membership criteria. The new members are inducted into the society during the spring semester. The chapter also hosts an annual lecture in addition to the induction ceremony.
