Collection Historical Note

The Edmundite Mission Corps (EMC) was founded in 1992 by the Society of Saint Edmund as a year-long volunteer program for college graduates, engaging in ministry among the poor in the African-American Community of the South.  Serving the communities of Selma, Alabama and New Orleans, Louisiana. Corps members worked directly within the communities as teachers and social workers in schools, parishes, state and private organizations, and Edmundite programs which addressed the housing, health, nutrition and educational needs of the poor in those communities.  Volunteers lived together, embracing a simple lifestyle in a Christian community to gain a greater understanding of the needs of the poor, and a deeper spiritual commitment to the Church’s mission of promoting social justice, as well as fostering one’s own spirituality.

The EMC existed from 1992-2004.  It ceased when financial considerations combined with the difficulty of keeping a core group of volunteers made the program unsustainable.
