Collection Historical Note
The Retirement Committee, also known as the Committee on the Retired, existed from 1971-1983 and was very active for much of that time. It was briefly revitalized in 1993. At a time when an increasing number of SSE were approaching retirement, the Superior General appointed this committee to study the issue. The Committee performed a great deal of research on the general issue of retirement among religious and different ways to handle to number of SSE’s who would be retiring in the coming years. By the time the committee was disbanded, the Society had increased its retirement funding substantially, made provisions for health care and living accommodations for the retired, and set up some general guidelines and policies about the retired.
