Administrative/Biographical History
The Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph served in the Bishop DeGoesbriand Memorial Hospital, their second Catholic hospital in Vermont State. Bishop Rice asked the RHSJ to staff and administer this new 100 bed hospital that supported the medical college of the University of Vermont.
Scope and Contents: This series consists of files created, accumulated and used by the Administrator of the Bishop DeGoesbriand Memorial Hospital, particularly during the tenure of Sister Frances Dower, from its opening in 1924, through the merger with the University of Vermont College of Medicine and the Mary Fletcher Hospital in 1966 to form the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont. It includes minutes, correspondence, by-laws and legal documents, financial documents, information on the staff, building, and programs of the hospital. The series consists of the following six subseries: administrator’s correspondence and other papers; by-laws; minutes, annual reports, and financial documents; Doctor and staff information; newspaper clippings and historical material; wills, bequests and deeds.
