Administrative/Biographical History
Fr. Victor Nicolle was born in Tanis, Manche, France and studied at Mont-Saint-Michel and Laval before beginning his novitiate in Winooski, Vermont. After his ordination, he served at Saint Michael’s College in a number of different positions. He was the American Provincial from 1919-1930 and the1930 General Chapter elected him Superior General, although Apostolic Visitor Dom Etcheverry continued to oversee much of the work of Nicolle for the next six years. One of Nicolle's first acts as Superior General was to move the General Administration of the Society to Vermont. Members of the Society continued to serve in Pontigny, but new members increasingly came from America. Fr. Nicolle set up a new house of Theology in Putney, Vermont (Theologate, Saint Mary’s). At the invitation of Francis Cardinal Bourne, the Society began a new foundation in England at Whitton under the direction of Fr. Louis Cheray.
