The Faculty Development Committee, (also known as the Professional Growth Committee) started out as an ad hoc committee.  It addressed the “burdens and ambitions of the teaching faculty.”  Before the inception of the committee, faculty development was an individual responsibility.  In 1981, the faculty recognized that they had a role to play in each individual faculty members’ development by creating this committee.  Its role is to facilitate professional growth by identifying needs and by improving conditions so that all faculty can perform better.  In 1984, the committee proposed that it become a standing committee.  The committee name underwent a change from Faculty Development Committee to Faculty Committee for Professional Growth in 1985.  It soon became simply the Professional Growth Committee.  In 1997, the name changed once again to Faculty Development Committee.  Its stated primary purpose is to encourage research among the faculty.  It oversees and encourages faculty development initiatives and individual faculty development plans on campus.  It gives out stipends to individuals encouraging research and encourages the sharing of research.
