Administrative/Biographical History
Father Jeremiah Purtill was the first American born Superior General for the Society. Purtill, a native of Pawcatuck, CT, attended Saint Michael’s College, where he also worked for a time. In his first term as Superior General he reinforced the areas in which Fr. Nicolle had expanded the Society. He continued to expand the Edmundite presence in the South, and saw the massive expansion of Saint Michael’s College during the postwar boom. He also agreed to take on the administration of new parishes in Vermont. He oversaw the establishment of the two important academic endeavors, College St-Edme at Pontigny, also known as the Franco-American College, and Cardinal Mindszenty High School in Dunkirk NY. He followed his first successful term of office with two more.
