Collection Historical Note
Eymard Galligan was born in Saratoga Springs, NY on Jan. 12, 1922. He attended Saint Michael's College and then entered the Novitiate in Putney, VT. After going through the Society’s formation program, he became the first Superior of the new Novitiate on Enders Island, CT. He then became the Superior of the Southern House, where he oversaw the growth of the missions during a period of great turmoil throughout the Southern US. He was elected Superior General in June 1964, and he took over a society with apostolates in 5 countries. His first term of office is marked by the struggle to adapt these apostolates to a changing world, especially in the South and a church dramatically affected by the Second Vatican Council. By the end of this term, the Society’s relationship with Saint Michael’s College changed drastically with the establishment of a lay president, the society began to slowly consolidate its apostolates and to scrutinize its heritage and mission through three Chapters.
