Scope and Contents of the Materials

This series is an excellent collection that provides an in-depth look at the academic career of Rev. Gerald E. Dupont.  A true scholar and academic, the collection provides insight into his astute philosophical intellect and includes the work he generated from his time at Saint Michael’s College as a student, priest, administrator, and professor.

The collection is separated into four sub-series: Academic Files, Academic Papers, Personal Papers, and Society of Saint Edmund Papers.

The Academic Files are comprised of administrative paperwork, arranged in numerical order by year.

The Academic Papers are comprised of the bulk of his academic work as student, teacher, graduate and doctoral candidate, arranged in numerical order by year, with undated files following in alphabetical order.

The Personal Papers reflect Father Dupont’s collection of everything that had meaning to him; notes and cards from family and friends, poems scribbled on scrap paper, and newspaper clippings.  It includes a well-preserved collection of vintage greeting cards, a play he wrote based on world history, family photos and letters, and his personal watercolors.  It is arranged alpha-numerically.

Finally, the Society of Saint Edmund Papers contain administrative business for the Edmundite society, arranged alpha-numerically.

Collection Historical Note

Originally from Providence, Rhode Island, the Reverend Gerald E. Dupont attended and spent all of his priestly life at Saint Michael’s.  Following his ordination in 1939, his service and leadership as Academic Dean and as President fostered tremendous growth and expansion for the college, both philosophically and physically.  While attending graduate school in Toronto and Montreal, where he obtained a Doctorate in Philosophy, Father Dupont took over as the 10th President of Saint Michael's in August 1958, being the last Edmundite to serve as president of the college.  During his tenure, he oversaw the continued construction of buildings on campus, including Saint Michael the Archangel Chapel, the Durick Library, Alliot Hall, and the final two quad residence halls.  Meanwhile, students continued to attend at record rates.  Student life changed as the makeup of the student body changed from returning GI’s to primarily 18-22 year olds.  Financial growth did not follow the other trends however, and fiscal problems grew throughout his term.  Of most importance however, was the groundwork he laid for the eventual switch to lay leadership.  Father Dupont was not unaware of the impact such a change was likely to have and there is some evidence that he planned significantly for something he saw as inevitable.
