In the 1930’s, after moving their general administrative offices from England to Vermont, the Society of Saint Edmund began to seek ways in which it could meet the call of Pope Pius X’s to serve the “Negro and Indian populations of North America.” In January 1937, Bishop Thomas Toolen of Mobile (AL) invited the Society to “establish a mission among the colored population in Selma.” By July 1937, three Edmundites were serving in Selma. Within a month, they began publishing Your Edmundite Missions Newsletter (now the Edmundite Missions Newsletter) to solicit funds for the new mission.
Over the years, the work of the Edmundites expanded to include:
Work in parishes and schools throughout Alabama, (especially in Selma, Anniston, Gadsden, Mobile and the Gulf Coast), in Elizabeth City and Wake Forest, NC, in Apalachicola FL, in New Orleans, LA and in Caracas, Venezuela. Sponsorship of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home and Good Samaritan Hospital in Selma from the 1940s until their closure in the 1980s The Don Bosco Boys Club Sponsorship of the Good Samaritan School of Practical Nursing, the first school of practical nursing for black students in Alabama. Additionally, the Edmundites have sponsored learning centers, health clinics, nutrition centers, and other social service organizations in Dallas, Wilcox, Monroe, and Lowndes Counties in Alabama, and have maintained parishes and a school in Louisiana. Through the years they worked very closely with many Religious orders of women through the South, including the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Rochester and the Daughters of the Holy Ghost.
The work of the Society in the South included entrusted parishes, sponsored works, campus ministry programs, educational endeavors and a number of chaplaincies. Sponsored works were often run by the society or a women’s religious order affiliated with the society. Much of the funding was through the Edmundite Missions Office, which quickly became an entity distinct from the Southern Missions as a whole, (although the office of Mission Director and Superior was held by the same person in the earliest years). In 1952, the local superior and mission director were held by different men for the first time, with the mission director given responsibility for the work outside of Selma or “the missions.” In 1991, another office was established to oversee the sponsored works of the southern missions, that of Program director. The Mission Director was responsible for raising funds, the Program Director was responsible for administering the works themselves, and the Superior took responsibility for the house, house members, and the work in parishes. An entity known as Fathers of Saint Edmund, Southern Missions, inc. was established in Alabama in1943 as the non-profit corporation.
The Society members were often the only whites regularly engaging with the African American population in their chosen locations. Administering and sponsoring institutions that were a part of the social fabric of the community allowed them to witness events integral to twentieth century America. As the civil rights movement took hold, the Edmundites continued to manage their insitutions while the communities they served radically changed. A few individuals became deeply involved in the movement.

Processing Information: This Record Group parallels the Local Administration/South record subgroup. Materials which accumulated in the Generalate offices prior to 2003 make up the Local Administration/South record subgroup. (It does not necessarily include correspondence written directly to the Superior General—those are kept with Superior General correspondence series.) The provenance of that record subgroup is unknown, although it is likely a combination of materials collected in the Generalate and some material transferred from the Southern Missions offices at an earlier time. It is possible that some material is duplicated. For a comprehensive view of the Society’s work in the South it may be necessary to explore all three collections.
Campus Ministry 1981-1990
The Society had a well-established campus ministry program at Xavier University in New Orleans in the 1970s and 1980s. From 1997-2002 they oversaw the Roman Catholic campus ministry at Tuskegee University in Alabama. The campus ministry series includes records related to Campus ministry programs administered by the society.

Records of the canonical house of the Southern Missions—the Selma House. The Selma House was not just residents of Selma, but also included residents of all the other places in the region; All sites in Alabama, North Carolina, Florida, and Caracas, as well as priests in Detroit. Those situated in New Orleans were also included, although for a time New Orleans had its own director while the society debated establishing it as another canonical house. Records include the house Chronicle, items from the Superior of the house and House meeting minutes. From 1937-1952, the canonical Superior also served in the role of Mission Director. As the work of the missions office became more complex, the two roles were separated, although they were sometimes held by the same person. In 1970, the House was reclassified as a region and the superior became the regional superior. Many of these records relate specifically to the members living in Selma, but the regional superior did have authority over all.

Missions Office 1941-2005
The missions office is the primary administrative wing of the southern missions. Soon after the establishment of the mission in 1937, the first newsletter went out. As the entire endeavor expanded, the work required an office with lay personnel. The Mission Director was responsible for the office. The work initially involved both fundraising (primarily through the newsletter) and administrative work related to the services offered through the missions. The fundraising work was monumental, and the procedures for opening mail, sending out appeals and the files of the appeals themselves are incredibly complex. Grant writing also involved a great deal of time, but was primarily done by the missions director himself. In 1989, Superior General McLaughlin established a program director to oversee the sponsored works of the missions, and a separate office with staff followed. The office employed a sizeable number of lay people and over the years a number of priests and brothers worked in one of the two offices. The missions office series includes administrative records from the missions office, the primary fundraising wing of the southern missions. Records also include personnel files, reports, office procedures and fundraising files.

Parishes 1939-1999
The Southern Missions encompassed a number of parishes over the years. Parishes were spread throughout the southern region, and most were long established. In a few instances the SSE were tasked by the diocese with establishing new parishes. These are very interesting. Most parishes also kept a chronicle Depending on the chronicler, these can provide great insight into the parish and the priests. Correspondence is also included. Usually this is between the pastor and the mission director or the missions office generally, but also can include other correspondence. For parishes with external missions, sponsored works or school, there is often some information about these as well. Financial records and construction/infrastructure records are also included, although financial records are more usually included in the financial record group. Clippings and history files are also often found.

Scrapbooks/Albums 1915?-1983
This subgroup includes scrapbooks and photo albums from the Missions Office. The majority of these did not originate in the office, but were kept for a particular parish or by a member of the SSE. Some are the personal albums of deceased members, while some include information about particular missions in which a member may have served. Many combine family/personal pictures with materials from a mission. Many of the scrapbooks are specific to a particular parish or school, but often times there are a number of subjects represented in a single album. Some of the scrapbooks were clearly kept for particular apostolates. Where possible, the creator of the scrapbook is identified.

This subgroup consists of scrapbooks and photo albums found in the photo room in the southern missions office. While a few may have originated in one or other of the houses, most seem to have come from the individual priests and were brought to the missions office following their retirement or their death. Many of the photo albums include both personal photographs as well as photographs of SSE parishes or apostolates
Condition note The poor conditions of some albums necessitated deconstructing them. Where possible the albums were photocopied to retain the layout, but in some cases the albums were already falling apart.

Women Religious are exceptionally important partners with the Society of Saint Edmund in the Southern Missions. Almost all of the sponsored works in the Southern Missions are administered and or staffed by sisters. Educational institutions, health clinics and hospitals, and food shelves, to name a few, have been under the general administration of sisters while sponsored by the Southern Missions. Additionally, sisters offer support in parishes.
The Society worked with a number of different orders in different locations. The series is arranged by religious order. Each series includes correspondence and general information about the order and often, the relationship with the Society. In some cases, especially where the relationship with the order was particularly strong, such as with the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Rochester, the records are more extensive and include things such as convent chronicles , correspondence and clippings.

Southern Missions, Inc. 1943-2002
Southern Missions, Inc was established according to the State of Alabama laws governing non-profit organizations in 30 June 1943. It was reincorporated again in 1977. The non-profit handles temporal affairs of the Southern Missions and serves in a legal capacity. The corporation is run by a Board headed by the Mission Director. The series includes minutes of meetings.

Southern Region 1971-1999
In Dec. 1970 a Southern Region was created, based in Selma. The regional designation is akin to a House, but allows for all the members living within the designated area to belong in a more inclusive manner. The Superior is a Regional Superior, rather than a superior for the house alone. In reality, the change was semantic rather than actual. The governance did not change, membership included persons from the same locations and the only canonical house was Selma.

Spiritual Reports 1938-1974
The Society of Saint Edmund required each priest to keep statistics about each parish they administered. These Spiritual Reports include statistics on the numbers and racial makeup of parishioners, the numbers of communions, wedding and baptisms and funeral performed each year. Priests were also asked to report on what sorts of mission work they did and what else was needed to achieve goals. Similar spiritual reports were also required by many dioceses, but this series includes only those required by the SSE. Some also include financial reports. They are arranged chronologically.

Sponsored Works
Sponsored works of the society, also referred to as sponsored apostolic works, are charitable works funded by the society that are usually, but not always, managed by non-Edmundites. Women religious are often the managers. This record group includes only some of the sponsored works—specifically those for which formal administrative records were found. Some of the sponsored works can be found in the subject files or with the religious order with which they were affiliated.
NOTE: The Good Samaritan hospital records are not included here and instead make up their own record group.
