Records Relating to Rev. Paul Laproste, Superio... | Saint Michael's College Archives & Special Collections

Father Paul Laproste was born in Ligny-le-Chatel, France. He entered the Society in Pontigny in 1856 and served most of his years in and around Pontigny. In 1892, following the death of Fr. Boyer, the 1891 Chapter reconvened and elected him Superior General.. He served as Superior General until 1907. During his administration, the Society suffered serious difficulty. France enacted the Law of Association and all houses of the Society were closed. The State confiscated the Society’s property, and the members of the Society dispersed. Laproste oversaw the creation of new foundations in Hitchin, England and in Swanton, Vermont, as well as the founding of Saint Michael’s College in Winooski. This subgroup consists of correspondence and a small file of Privileges and Dispensations. The correspondence is arranged chronologically and translations for most are filed at the end of each year. The translator, who organized and numbered both the letters and translations, is unknown.
